As Mai new show STEAMPUNK'D on GSN approaches this late August, I've been counting down the days with you guys in anticipation. I'm excited to introduce you to the judges who will be making the big decision each week to decide who is America's most talented Steampunk Maker. We scoured the US in search of the best designers, wood makers, seamstresses, carpenters who can handcraft their "Steampunk" imagination into reality and found these 12 talented, awesome individuals that are up for the challenge.
This is definitely one of the most creative projects I've ever been a part of. It's been so much fun working with all of the people on set and to be inspired by what these judges have to say. I had to sneak in a lil selfie during one of the deliberations we recently had. Check out Kato...woman's always got her shit together. Me, Matt and Thomas...we sip the cray cray Kool Aid.
STEAMPUNK'D wouldn't be as fun as it is without the sick judges that we brought in to work with the designers. They are: Kato, Thomas Willeford and Matt King. So you can get to know them a bit before the show, I wanted to do a quick introduction of who they are, and the best moments I've had with each of them:
For those of you who don't already know Kate Lambert AKA Kato, prepare to have your next #WCW post already up and receiving ALL the likes. Kato is the queen boss lady of Steampunk. Seriously, people refer to her as the original STEAMGIRL. This girl is on fiyah and gives no fux. Once you get past her bad ass self made designs, she's the sweetest, elegant, biz savvy woman.
You guys have met the queen, now it's time to get to know the KING of Steampunk, Thomas Willeford. Since the 80s Thomas has been combining his passions for art and engineering to create the most incredible Steampunk pieces, even receiving multiple awards for his work. He basically wrote the encyclopedia on Steampunk called Steampunk Gears, Gadgets & Gizmos. Some of Mai most fave moments on set was just listening to the story of his life. He actually helped me a lot when it came to tips dealing with insensitive people. Thanks for the words of encouragement, Thomas.
Matt Yang King
Enter the room Matt King. He's brilliant, ballsy, and bad ass foodie. Matt Yang King is the winner of the CAPE/Hollywood Foreign Press Young Screenwriters Award and the creator, writer and director of The World of Steam; a Twilight Zone-like seasonal anthology series set in a Steampunk universe. More importantly, he's like Mai Wikipedia, Snapple cap, and Yelp all in one. I could talk to this man for hours and feel smarter walking out. Not enough? Dude's got THE cutest kids in the world.
So, what do all of the judges have in common? Their endless obsession and dedication to the STEAMPUNK'D movement. Each of the judges' passion is always next level and really inspiring. They always care so much about the designers we feature on the show and it's a truly unique and tight community.
