I'm really missing mai blue hair this week. Heard from a few of Maispirations on Twitter and IG who are rocking the blue now (thx for the shoutouts!) and it made me wanna go dig up all these old skool pics just to reminisce. I love how I'm seeing more creativity with hair color lately, from pinks to yellows, even some sick grays! As much as I loved mai blue, it was hard to care for. (Oh..many nights of blue stained pillow cases, late wine nights with Freddy (poor guy) having to touch up the color, lol.) Keeping hair healthy with all that dye in it wasn't easy but there are some tips that will help along the way. I reached out to mai fave, badass colorist Cassondra Kaeling and got the scoop on how to choose and care for your fun colored hair.
JM: What are the most popular “bright colors” in beauty and hair care right now?
CK: Bright colors dominated 2014. This year, there are two colors that are still trending: violet and gray. The most notable (and most referenced) celebrity with lavender locks is Kelly Osborne. As for gray, we just saw Miley Cyrus sporting it at the Met Gala.
JM: What tips do you have for people who are interested in dying their hair one of these colors?
CK: Preparation is key. You must use the right shampoos, conditioners, and oils consistently, so that the hair is in the best condition possible. Also keep in mind that achieving the "fun" color you desire might not happen in the first round.
JM: What are some of the best products to use?
CK: I swear by the Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Oil. You can apply this to wet or dry hair. This oil helps to nourish and protect the hair, it also aids in taming frizz. For shampoo and conditioner, I'd recommend the Sally Hershberger Hyper Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. It's sulfate and paraben free, helping smooth and give shine and luster to that hair.
JM: What was the most challenging part of getting mai gray blue?
CK: Technique, timing and formulation. You naturally have a dark base, so one has to consider the underlying pigment. In your case, you have a lot of warmth so I had to make the color ashier. Next I strategically added a full head of balayage highlights to make your ends lighter.
JM: Is there a hair color that is more difficult to dye than another? Are there any risks involved?
CK: The darker the hair, the harder it is because the hair goes through more trauma with a longer processing time and higher bleach content. Several risks include breakage, loss of hair, brassy pigments and even green pigments.
JM: How should someone properly maintain or care for their fun-colored hair?
CK: Try a moisturizing hair mask once a week, I'm using Shu Uemura Moisturizing Velvet on my clients right now. It's also crucial to use a color-treated shampoo so the color stays vibrant and doesn't fade.
